Dental charting software with FDI numbering and five surfaces

The dental chart in Devign Dentistry shows the 32 permanent teeth in FDI two-digit numbering. Click a tooth, click a surface, choose a condition: the chart updates and keeps the date. It belongs to a complete clinic system, so the same chart feeds treatment plans and invoices, and it works in the browser and on iPhone and Android.

How a chart entry works

  1. Open the patient and go to the dental chart, in arch view or grid view.
  2. Click the tooth, for example 36.
  3. Click the surface: mesial, occlusal, distal, buccal or lingual.
  4. Choose the condition from your clinic's legend, for example healthy, decayed, filled, crown, missing, implant or root canal.
  5. The surface changes colour and the change is saved with its date.

Each clinic edits its own legend: rename a condition, change its colour or add conditions that match your specialty.

Reading FDI numbers

FDI numbering uses two digits. The first is the quadrant: 1 upper right, 2 upper left, 3 lower left, 4 lower right. The second is the tooth counted from the midline, from 1 (central incisor) to 8 (third molar). Tooth 36 is therefore the lower left first molar, and tooth 11 the upper right central incisor.

The five surfaces

  • Mesial the side facing the midline of the mouth.
  • Distal the side facing away from the midline.
  • Occlusal the biting surface.
  • Buccal the side facing the cheek.
  • Lingual the side facing the tongue.

Recording at surface level, not only at tooth level, is what lets a later visit answer a simple question: which surface was filled, and when.

From the chart to the plan and the invoice

A treatment plan is built from your own procedure catalogue, with procedures set against teeth. Completed work becomes invoice lines in the billing module, so the tooth that was treated and the amount that was charged stay connected. See dental billing software and appointment scheduling.

Try the chart before you sign up

The home page has a working demo chart: click a tooth and a surface and set conditions. Open it at the demo chart. When you want your own, the 30-day free trial needs no credit card.

What the chart does not do

  • It shows the 32 permanent teeth. There is no primary (baby) teeth chart today.
  • It uses FDI numbering only. There is no switch to Universal or Palmer notation.
  • X-rays and scans can be attached to the patient file as documents (up to 10 MB each); the chart does not draw on or measure images.

Questions about dental charting

Does the dental chart use FDI or Universal numbering?

FDI two-digit numbering only. If your team is used to Universal or Palmer notation, the numbers on the chart will be FDI numbers.

How many surfaces can I record per tooth?

Five: mesial, occlusal, distal, buccal and lingual. Each surface carries its own condition.

Can I use my own condition names and colours?

Yes. Each clinic edits its legend in the settings: rename the conditions, change their colours and add new ones.

Is the history of changes kept?

Yes. Every change to a tooth is saved with its date, so you can see what was recorded and when.

Can I chart children's primary teeth?

Not yet. The chart covers the 32 permanent teeth in FDI numbering.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. It runs in the browser on any device and as iPhone and Android apps published by Devign LLC.
